A visual of Blooms Taxonomy
Using the traditional behaviorist approach would not be adequate to realize my technology vision. The behaviorist model does not focus on the big picture enough to truly build the understanding that the vision is trying to encourage. To effectively implement my technological vision in the classroom I would craft my pedagogical practice around Bloom’s taxonomy and Kohler’s cognitive psychology approach.
At the center of the class will be a major trans-historical question that students investigate throughout the class. To address the complexity of the question, Blooms taxonomy will be useful in breaking down assignments into logical steps that eventually culminate into the final project. By using Blooms I will be able to keep the class within Vygotsky’s zone of proximal development to avoid overwhelming any students. The cognitive model is at the center of everything that this technological vision is attempting to accomplish. Through the individual analysis of endless archives of online artifacts in their blogs students will begin to piece together several elements that eventually come together as a useful decision making tool in the form of historical identity. Another aspect in this technology vision supported by the cognitive model is the encoding for long term memory. By asking students to complete activities that combine both their own experience combined with historical information students will encode more information and skills that can be recalled for future use. As Linda Levstik reported in her article “Doing History” students doing history by using higher level analytical thinking tasks better organize their ideas and will be able to encode more ideas for the long term. Levstik also says the invitation for student’s prior knowledge is important because it allows for them to reconstruct their sense of reality with the class’s information creating a more complex understanding that can be transferred into their lives.
